School Counselors of the Year to Be Honored at White House Ceremony on January 30, 2015

2013 American Counselor of the Year Mindy Willard from Sunset Ridge among the honorees

Mindy Willard, the 2013 American School Counselor of the Year will be honored at a recognition ceremony scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on January 30, 2015 at the White House, hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama. The 2015 Counselor of the Year as well as past recipients including Mindy Willard, school counselor at Sunset Ridge Elementary located in Glendale, Arizona will also be honored. This is the first time in history that the White House has recognized this prestigious award.

In addition to being the 2013 American Counselor of the Year, Mindy also serves as the current President of the Arizona School Counselor’s Association and uses her position to not only advocate for students, but also for the need for school counselors in the K-8 educational setting. Never one to take personal credit, Mindy acknowledges, “The Administration and Governing Board of the Pendergast District for the outstanding support that have allowed her to grow as a professional and provided her with numerous opportunities to develop her career and help others.”

Dr. Lily Matos DeBlieux, PESD Superintendent, shares her pride towards Mindy and all of the school counselors in PESD’s schools. "We are fortunate that our Governing Board is so supportive of the need for school counselors and the difference they are making in our students’ lives. There are many challenges that face our students and families and our dedicated counselors help navigate the students on the pathways to success. Mindy will represent PESD and her school well and we are so proud of her achievements and all she has done for the school, district, state of Arizona and its students.”
