A huge thank you to Sabine Bachner, a 7th grade teacher at Amberlea Elementary, for planning and organizing the Pendergast for Puerto Rico Donation Drive! Pendergast for Puerto Rico was a huge success and over 600 pounds of canned food and a truck load of water bottles, flashlights, and batteries were collected.

The majority of the goods will be delivered to San Juan by ship while 365 pounds of canned goods went directly to a high needs community in Puerto Rico - called Canovanas.

Ginelle Aviles, a resource teacher from Sonoran Sky and fellow Puerto Rican, had booked a trip to Puerto Rico a while back for her birthday. After the hurricane hit, she used the opportunity to convince Delta Airlines to let her take the 365 pounds of canned goods free of charge into San Juan. She then spent her birthday week as a volunteer for disaster relief.

Cash or checks can be made payable to the Pendergast Community Education Foundation and can be given to your site/department supervisor or principal. Donations to the Foundation can now be made ONLINE >>

  • Jeans must be tasteful, no tears, rips or worn areas and no leggings.

Risk Management

SAFETY TIP OF THE WEEK

With active supervision and some basic safety tips, every day at the playground can be a walk in the park.

The Hard Facts

Falls are the most common type of playground injury, accounting for more than 75 percent of all playground-related injuries. Lack of or improper supervision is associated with approximately 45 percent of playground-related injuries.

Top Tips

  1. Actively supervise children on playgrounds. It won’t be hard – they’ll probably be calling for you to watch them climb, jump and swing.
  2. Dress appropriately for the playground. Remove necklaces, purses, scarves or clothing with drawstrings that can get caught on equipment and pose a strangulation hazard. Even helmets can be dangerous on a playground, so save those for bikes.
  3. Teach children that pushing, shoving or crowding while on the playground can be dangerous.
  4. Report all safety concerns to your Administrator and have them complete a work order for any broken equipment.

Dictionaries for our Third Graders - Thank You Arrowhead Kiwanis Club!

Thank you to Arrowhead Kiwanis Club for providing dictionaries for each of our 3rd grade students! Thank you to our third grade teachers for welcoming our Kiwanis Club members! Here’s a note from Frank, Arrowhead Kiwanis Club Leader, who led this endeavor -- This significant project ended on October 11, 2017 when the last dictionary was delivered to a new enrollment at one of the schools. 1.342 dictionaries were delivered to 14 school 3rd graders in 2 school districts. I just want to express my sincerest appreciation and kudos to some very great people. First and foremost, Alisa Pena at Union Elementary School District and Kelsie Pennington at Pendergast Elementary School district. Your cheerful willingness and efficiency made our role so easy. Obtaining numbers and student names by school was timely and most helpful as was the scheduling of days and times for distribution. Thank you. We truly hope to work with you ladies again next year.

ABSENCE MANAGEMENT FORMALLY AESOP

As you may know, the district is working with ESI to secure substitute/guest teachers. Laura Stockmar in HR is still the district liaison for guest teachers and with ESI. As we coordinate with this outside company, it is important that teachers do not contact guest teachers directly when needing coverage for an absence. To secure the services of a preferred guest teacher, work directly with your school administrator or school secretary.
