Dear Staff,

Congratulations to Kelly Neckels, third grade teacher at Amberlea Elementary, for being selected as the 2017 Arizona English Learner Teacher of the Year! Kelly has been an SEI classroom teacher for over seventeen years and has worked hard to make sure each and every student she teaches receives strong instruction.

We've all had that favorite teacher growing up; the one who went above and beyond to make our year special. I would like to thank all of you for your dedication as you tirelessly work to educate our Pendergast students.

Teaching can be incredibly challenging work, yet we can and do change lives everyday. The best part of my day, is when I'm out visiting classrooms throughout the District and seeing how you are inspiring generations of students to think, learn, create and accomplish things they never believed they could do.

According to a Japanese proverb, "Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher." There's such truth in these words and I am honored to work alongside the talented staff we have in the Pendergast Elementary School District. You are truly AMAZING!

CONTEST: Read to Succeed with Achieve3000

Show your students how reading is the key to success in school and beyond with our new contest. We know that the more students use KidBiz, the more their reading skills improve. So, to help your students grow even more, we're sponsoring the Read to Succeed contest.

All school sites/classes in the Pendergast District have been registered to participate.

Since your students are automatically enrolled in Read to Succeed, participating is easy! Just have your students complete at least eight multiple-choice activities from Monday, November 6 through Friday, December 8. We'll keep track of their progress and will notify you when your class has qualified. At least 75% of your class needs to do eight or more activities during the contest.

To encourage your students to put forth their very best effort, we're giving out extra points for high scores.

  • Every time a student does an activity, your class earns a point
  • For every score of 75%, the class earns two points
  • For every score of 88% or higher, the class earns three points

The winning class is the qualifying class with the most points on average, per student, in your school. Only classes that have 5 or more students at the close of the contest are eligible to win a prize.

(Note: If your students belong to more than one class, please be sure they select the correct class when logging in. Work will be credited to the class selected upon login.

Reading success is right around the corner! Click here to read more about the contest.

How To Clean and Disinfect Schools To Help Slow the Spread of Flu

Cleaning and disinfecting are part of a broad approach to preventing infectious diseases in schools. To help slow the spread of influenza (flu), the first line of defense is getting vaccinated. Other measures include staying home when sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and washing hands often.

Below are tips on how to slow the spread of flu specifically through cleaning and disinfecting.

  • Know the difference between cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing. Cleaning removes germs, disinfecting kills germs and sanitizing lowers the number of germs.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that are touched often. Follow your school’s standard procedures for routine cleaning and disinfecting. District procedure is to not use household chemicals, including Clorox wipes. The District’s Maintenance Team can provide you District approved cleaner.
  • Simply do routine cleaning and disinfecting.
  • Clean and disinfect correctly. Always follow label directions on cleaning products.

HANDWASHING: CLEAN HANDS SAVE LIVES! When should you wash your hands?

  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before eating food
  • Before and after caring for someone who is sick
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound
  • After using the toilet
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After touching an animal, animal feed or animal waste
  • After touching garbage

How should you wash your hands?

  • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

As you may know, the district is working with ESI to secure substitute/guest teachers. Laura Stockmar in HR is still the district liaison for guest teachers and with ESI. As we coordinate with this outside company, it is important that teachers do not contact guest teachers directly when needing coverage for an absence. To secure the services of a preferred guest teacher, work directly with your school administrator or school secretary.
