Dear Staff,
February is Black History Month and can be a wonderful celebration of the contributions that African American inventors, artists, explorers, educators, scientists, leaders, laborers, soldiers and poets have made to American history and culture.
Black History Month was founded by African American scholar Carter G. Woodson and inaugurated in 1926 at Chicago's DuSable Museum of African-American History. Woodson chose February because it included the birthdays of abolitionist Frederick Douglas and President Abraham Lincoln.
Black History Month is a reminder to all of us to bring greater regard for the contributions of African Americans to this country, to understand and overcome a legacy of oppression and racism, and to further racial harmony among us all.
I BEE-lieve in you!
