Dear Staff,

February is Black History Month and can be a wonderful celebration of the contributions that African American inventors, artists, explorers, educators, scientists, leaders, laborers, soldiers and poets have made to American history and culture.

Black History Month was founded by African American scholar Carter G. Woodson and inaugurated in 1926 at Chicago's DuSable Museum of African-American History. Woodson chose February because it included the birthdays of abolitionist Frederick Douglas and President Abraham Lincoln.

Black History Month is a reminder to all of us to bring greater regard for the contributions of African Americans to this country, to understand and overcome a legacy of oppression and racism, and to further racial harmony among us all.

The National Education Association has lessons and resources that may help you teach this important topic, from historical figures and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, to slavery and the Civil War, to racism and discrimination. Grades: K-5th | 6th-8th

Please join me in celebrating our counselor's efforts, hard work and dedication during National School Counseling Week (February 5-9). The goal of this week is to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within our school systems. Our counselors have a tremendous impact on students by helping them achieve school success and planning for the future.

I am here to serve you. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

The Recognition Committee has been hard at work on this year's PESD BEEliever Awards Night. We will continue our Adventures in Pendergast theme by honoring staff for the amazing contributions they have made this year.
