Public Schools Week

Dear Staff,

March 25-29, 2019 is Public Schools Week and celebrates our nation’s public schools, our students and the many school professionals who work to help students achieve their greatest potential. Public education is unique in that it is open to all, regardless of background. It is continually evolving to keep pace with changes in technology, culture, legislation and numerous other influences. Thank you all for your continued hard work each day to make every child’s potential a reality!

4th Annual Golf Tournament

Be Recognized Award pictureOn Saturday, the Pendergast Education Foundation held their fourth annual Golf Tournament. We don't have a final total yet; however, we believe it will be well over $10,000!

The purpose of the Foundation is to promote, inspire and support current and future students, as well as, current and potential teachers. The Foundation achieves this by conducting fundraisers, such as the annual golf tournament, Dress Down Fridays, grants and tax-deductible donations that provide:

  • Student extracurricular and educational programs
  • Special events for teachers and students
  • Professional growth and development opportunities
  • Donations of charitable health services to qualifying students

To find out more about the Pendergast Education Foundation, please visit their website at - http://pendergastfoundation.org/

I am here to serve you. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

I BEE-lieve in you!

ACE PROGRAMS AVAILABLE FOR DISTRICT EDUCATORS

American College of Education (ACE) is very excited to partner with Pendergast Elementary School District  to assist your staff in reaching their educational goals. Additionally, I am pleased to let you know ACE now has two new programs that were developed due to high interest from our partner population. We would greatly appreciate if you would include this information in a staff update, as they both are high-demand programs. Your tuition discount, coupled with ACE’s already low tuition structure, make these programs an attainable goal for almost anyone needing additional education. In addition, your educators can take ACE’s single course offerings to fulfill any educational gaps they may have.

M.Ed. in Special Education >>

  • This program is for current PreK-12 special education teachers who want to expand their knowledge and earn a master’s degree. It is a 34-hour program designed to provide an in-depth study of research-based methods to support students with exceptionalities in current educational settings.

Ed.S. in District Level Administration >>

  • This degree is designed for educational leaders who wish to become a superintendent or district-level administrator. This program equips students with the skills necessary to effectively lead a PreK-12 school district.

BEE RECOGNIZED NOMINATIONS

Be Recognized Award pictureEach month, members of the Administrative Cabinet will present a “BEE Recognized Award” to thank and recognize dedicated employees, parents, business partners and community members for their contributions to the schools and district. Awards will be presented at a governing board meeting each month.

Please assist us in showing how valuable these people are to Pendergast Elementary School District. A committee will review the nominations and make selections based on qualifications and indicators. More than one nomination per person may be submitted and please answer questions as thoroughly as possible.

Please send or email this nomination form to the Superintendent’s office to the attention of: Nedda Shafir at nshafir@pesd92.org. For questions contact Nedda at 602-684-4806.

EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT SERVICES

ESS Department is preparing for Extended School Year Services for the summer of 2019. What are extended school year services?  Extended school year services are special education and related services that are provided to a child with a disability beyond the normal school year, are in accordance with a child’s IEP, are provided at no cost to the parents, and are in alignment with the standards set by the state education agency (SEA). [34 C.F.R. § 300.106(b)]

The regulations that implement the IDEA require IEP teams to determine, on an individual basis, whether ESY services are necessary to provide a (Free Appropriate Public Education) FAPE to the child. [34 C.F.R. § 300.106(a)(1)]

“Student participation in an ESY program is not compulsory. ESY services are not required for all students with a disability.”[A.A.C R7-2-408(D)] “Eligibility for [ESY] participation shall not be based on need or desire for any of the following: 1) A day care or respite care service for students with a disability; 2) A program to maximize the academic potential of a student with a disability; and 3) A summer recreation program for students with a disability.” [Id. at Subsection (E)]
