Dear Staff,

I am continually amazed at the success and growth of our academies throughout the Pendergast District. We are committed to providing engaging and quality academies that are built upon student engagement in an environment that is challenging yet supportive.

Our focus is to engage our students in problem solving, collaboration, and hands-on activities while they work alongside our business partners to apply the rigor of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

Hispanic culture is a big part of the United States. From cuisine, to arts, to sports and public service, Hispanic traditions and culture are part of many people's lives. Every year from September 15 to October 15, we take time to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

There are a number of resources available to help explore Hispanic Heritage Month in your classroom including:

Through these resources, students can explore the history of Hispanic culture in America and expose our students to world traditions. The best part is that many of these resources can be used all year round!

I am here to serve you. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Please help the 8th Grade Superintendent Student Council and the Pendergast Education Foundation SOCK IT to Hurricane Harvey by supporting the Houston Flood Relief Sock Drive. Guidance and Student Support Services

This week’s Skill of the Week is Disagreeing Appropriately. Students often find themselves in conversations where they disagree with the opinion of the person with whom they are speaking. Many times, children choose to argue, yell, or use some form of physical aggression to show the other person that they do not agree with his or her opinion. Teaching students to disagree appropriately provides them with a skill for handling situations in which they find themselves “at odds” with the opinions of others.

Here is a link to a Boys Town lesson plan on Disagreeing Appropriately >>

School Improvement & Program Development

Khan Academy LearnStorm is a free, six-week challenge that helps your students build the skills and mindsets to start the school year strong. Schools can join LearnStorm now through the end of the challenge on October 20.

The six-week challenge is for students in grades 3-12. It is designed to foster academic skills and a “growth mindset,” or the belief that anyone can build and grow their intelligence through perseverance and practice.

Teachers in the United States can sign up for LearnStorm to access six growth mindset activities and lesson plans. They will have a class progress tracker that lets them monitor students’ accomplishments.

Exceptional Student Services

The Pendergast Elementary School district is proud to offer Preschool screening services as part of our commitment to AzFIND (Child Find). Child Find is a component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA ’04) that requires Public Education Agencies (PEA) to locate, identify, and evaluate all children with disabilities, aged birth through 21, located within their geographical boundaries who are in need of early intervention or special education services. As part of that service, PESD offers regular screenings for children ages 2 years, 9 months, to 5 years (prior to Kindergarten enrollment).
