Dedication Events Celebrate New Pendergast "Green" School

Pendergast Elementary School officially became the first LEED certified K-8 green school in Phoenix when dedication events were held at the school Wednesday, August 26th. A public celebration was held at 1:30 pm with City of Phoenix Councilman Claude Mattox speaking to about 100 guests, and an evening "grand opening" led tours for parents, students and staff.

Members of the student "Green Team" led tours for guests at both events.

A special ceremony was held during the grand opening to dedicate the school's library to Alice Pendergast. Principal Michael Woolsey thanked Mrs. Pendergast and the entire family for years of support to the school through gifts of time and many anonymous donations for students and families in need.

Superintendent Ron Richards addressed the afternoon audience and acknowledged the support of the community for passing the bonds which financed the school. Susan Serin, Governing Board President, thanked the Board, administration, community and school staff for the vision and support to make the school a reality.

Mattox said that the seeds for the "green" movement were planted by the John F. Long family in the early development of the West Valley. Vispi Karanjia of architect firm Orcutt-Winslow Partnership shared some of the building design and construction principles that make it a leader in energy efficiency, conservation and enhanced learning. The facility was constructed by Jim O'Connor Construction.  Click here to see photos from the event
