What is the iTeach AZ Pendergast Program?
The iTeach AZ Pendergast Program is an innovative, accelerated program for prospective teachers in Phoenix’s West Valley that is offered through a unique partnership of Arizona State University and the Pendergast Elementary School District. The iTeach AZ Pendergast Program provides students a fast-track, 18-month path to a degree and teacher certification.
The Pendergast-ASU program graduated its first students in May, 2009. The 2010-2011 cohort had 29 students enrolled. Four of the students received scholarships from the Pendergast Education Foundation and are now graduates.
Students in the program cite the cost savings (18 months tuition vs. 24 months); the hands-on training and multiple classroom experiences; and the benefits of working and learning close to home as some of the advantages of the program.
Students enter the program by being accepted through the ASU College of Teacher Education & Leadership application process for the iTeach AZ Program. The iTeach AZ Program attracts traditional four-year college students; professionals making career changes; current employees in school districts seeking teacher certification; and adults returning to college to complete degree programs.
The Pendergast District is the home site for all ASU course work and field experiences for its students. A full-time iTeach AZ adviser supports and coordinates the Pendergast program. Pendergast teachers, coaches and administrators provide mentoring for the PDS student-teachers.
