School News
1. We will be having a guest author at our school on November 25th. Conrad Storad will be presenting both fiction and non-fiction books that he has written to our students. Mr. Storad spoke to our school as a new author in 1993 about his first book Saguaro Cactus. Since then he has written many books such as: Trantula, Scorpion, Don't Call Me Pig, etc. Click below if you would like to visit his web site.
Our book fairs at Desert Mirage help support bringing outstanding authors such as Mr. Storad to our school.
2. Desert Mirage Choir will be singing from 6 P.M. until 7 P.M. at Border's Book Store at 99th Ave and McDowell. Students will be presenting a variety of songs for all to enjoy. Please stop by and support our DM Choir.
3. Do you know your math facts?? Well the students at Desert Mirage are certainly learning theirs. We have a number of programs that help students develop their math facts so that they are automatic and do not slow down daily calculations or make them so tedious that they do not enjoy math. Second grade is participating in a computerized math facts program that will eventually be available to all of our students. DM K-8 students also use a daily paper and pencil "Math Facts" program. Be sure to ask your student how they are doing and spend some time helping them practice the next level of facts.
4. Reading, writing and math can be practiced in our everyday activities.
a. Take your children to the store and have them help you calculate prices, tax, running totals of purchases, or weights of fruits and vegetables. All of these provide students with math operations that will keep their calculation skills sharp.
b. Enroll your student in the Reading program at a library near home. All the public libraries offer different incentive programs for reading. Students earn participate in different fun activities and keep their reading skills sharp. Try it out - it is great fun for all.
c. How is your favoritie grandmother, aunt, uncle or cousin? Write a letter to one of them and find out. This activity supports spelling, handwriting, creative thinking and grammar usage - besides keeping in touch with the family.
