The Villa de Paz School SET subcommittee on Homework Policy recommended to SET that Villa de Paz School establish a Homework Policy. Based on the results of the Homework Survey and remarks by teachers, the following was submitted and approved by SET, on March 19, 2001. The Villa de Paz School Homework policy is a moderately flexible policy giving teachers liberal discretion using the guidelines recommended by the community and the National Education Association (NEA). Teachers of the same grade level are encouraged to define a flexible uniform policy for their classes. 7^th & 8^th grade teachers are encouraged to work cooperatively to establish a reasonable guideline for frequency and length of homework assignments to avoid overload on a single night. Except for make-up work and long-term projects, homework should be avoided over weekends. Homework assignments are to be determined, at teacher discretion, with emphasis on meaningful practice/repetition with occasional "new learning" assignments and occasional special projects. Homework is to be checked for effort and correctness, and graded by the teacher or under the teacher’s supervision. The value applied to homework assignments is at the discretion of the teacher. The community guideline reflects approximately 20-25% of the over-all grade. Whenever possible, and at teacher discretion, 5-10 minutes of class time should be allowed for students to begin homework assignments. This is for the purpose of helping to assure the students understand the assignment and have the opportunity to resolve any issues relating to the assignment. The frequency and duration of the homework assignments are at the discretion of the teacher. The community has offered their guidelines as listed below. NEA guidelines are that homework should be given 3-4 nights per week with a duration of 10 minutes per grade level.
